About this piece
Tanzanite is blue zoisite and it comes from a single small area in the Merelani Hills of northern Tanzania. Nowhere else. Almost all of it is heated: the crystals come out of the ground brownish and heating to around 500°C turns them blue. This one is heated and declared. It is strongly trichroic, showing blue, violet and a brownish tone down different crystal axes, which is why the cutter's orientation matters so much on this species. Mohs 6 to 7 with one direction of perfect cleavage — occasional wear only.
