The label a museum would put beside it.
Coloured stone retail runs on an information gap. Most buyers do not know that nearly all emerald is fracture-filled, that most citrine began as amethyst in a kiln, or that a Mohs 8 topaz can split more easily than a Mohs 7 garnet. None of that is a secret in the trade. It is simply not printed on the tag.
So we print it. Every piece here opens with a declaration block: species, origin, treatments listed individually, carat and total carat weight where there is more than one stone, millimetre size, Mohs hardness, a wear grade in words, metal fineness, net metal weight, hallmark status and — where the item goes through a piercing — its nickel release compliance.

Hardness is not the same thing as toughness.
Hardness describes resistance to scratching. Toughness describes resistance to breaking. Topaz is Mohs 8 and has a perfect cleavage plane, so a sharp knock can split it cleanly. Sapphire is Mohs 9 with no cleavage at all and shrugs the same knock off. A single number cannot tell you that, so we give you the number and then say plainly what to do with the piece.
Every item carries one of three wear grades, written out: suitable for daily wear, occasional wear, or delicate and for special occasions only. Each grade comes with the specific things to keep it away from — never a blanket promise about durability, which no jeweller can honestly make.

Multi-stone
Pieces that carry several stones at once. Every stone is listed separately with its own species, origin, treatment and hardness, and the carat figure given is the total carat weight across all stones, marked TCW. Where a piece is assembled to a selection you make, it is made to order and the 14 day withdrawal right does not apply — that is stated before you add it to the basket.

Rough crystal terminations and cabochon cuts, set as found or as domed. These pieces are described in mineralogical and visual terms only — species, habit, colour, hardness, wear grade. Natural crystal faces are irregular by definition, so every piece in this line differs from its photograph more than a calibrated cut stone would.

Bought this for my mother's September birthday. What sold me was the treatment line on the product page — it says heated, plainly, next to the price. Three other sites I looked at said nothing at all.

Colour is a touch darker than the photograph in low light, which the page did warn about. Chain is finer than I expected at 45 cm. No complaints about the stone itself.

I did not know fracture filling was normal for emerald until I read the declaration page here. Would rather be told than find out from a jeweller in ten years. Arrived in three days.
