About this piece
Zircon is zirconium silicate, a natural mineral, and among the oldest solid material found on earth — individual zircon crystals from Western Australia have been dated at over four billion years. It is entirely unrelated to cubic zirconia, which is a manufactured imitation with a similar-sounding name and no natural occurrence in gem sizes. This stone is natural zircon, heated to produce the blue. Its dispersion is close to diamond's, so it throws noticeable fire. The facet edges are slightly softer than corundum's; that is characteristic of the species.
