About this piece
A slice cut across a nodule of banded agate — cryptocrystalline quartz — and polished on both faces so the concentric banding reads through. The banding records successive depositions of silica into a cavity, which is why no two slices are alike. Undyed: the greys, whites and translucent bands are the material's own. Agate is Mohs 6.5 to 7 but a thin slice is structurally fragile at the edges, so this is graded occasional wear.
